Velma M. Loncar, 99, of Parkville, Mo passed away on September 16, 2014 at her home, surrounded by family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Elsa Miller of Parkville, MO; her sisters, Berniece Vaughan of Lodi, CA and Marjorie Dudley of North Kansas City, MO; and her brother, Kenneth Miller of Frankenmuth, MI. She is survived by her husband of 79 years, Jack Loncar of Parkville, MO; her son, John Loncar (Nobuko) of Honolulu, HI and her daughter, Kate Loncar of Parkville, MO; two grandchildren, Shawn Loncar (Aga) of Chicago, IL and Shannon Loncar (Joel) of Long Island, NY.She is also survived by her sister, Bettie Noland of Winter Haven, FL and her brother, Bill Miller of Mesa, AZ; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Velma grew up on a farm in the Parkville area. She met and married Jack Loncar in 1935 and began teaching grades one through four at Graden School in Parkville. She taught in the Parkville schools for 35 years, and was a gifted and beloved teacher. She taught generations of first graders and gave hundreds of children the gift of reading. Her classroom was a safe and loving environment where learning was a joy. She never forgot a student. She cared for all of them and was proud of their accomplishments.
After retirement in 1976 Velma and Jack spent winters at their home in Mission, TX. Velma enjoyed fishing and hunting, square dancing and clogging, quilting and crocheting, playing Mah-jongg, traveling with Jack in their Airstream trailer, and riding with him on his motorcycle.
A celebration of Velma’s life will be held on October 18, 2014 at 10 a.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer 7110 North State Route 9, Parkville, MO. In lieu of flowers the family suggested donations to the Velma Loncar Memorial Library Fund at Graden Elementary School 8804 NW Highway 45 Parkville, MO 64152.
