Elizabeth Racine Rens passed away on August 3, 2014 at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. Racine’s passing comes after a long and courageous fight with Chronic Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis, a progressive lung disease.
She was born on March 11, 1966 in Garden City, Kansas and adopted on March 18 by Ralph Williams Snider and Donna Louise Read Snider of Council Grove, Kansas.
Racine grew up in Council Grove where she was baptized at the Congregational Church on her 1st birthday. Racine participated in swimming, dance and cheerleading as a youth. She was also a member of the Bethel # 41 International Order of Job’s Daughters for whom she served as Honor Queen and also held an office in the Grand Bethel.
Racine graduated from Council Grove High School in 1984. During high school Racine continued with dance and cheerleading but took special pleasure in singing as part of the Brave Voices.
After graduating Racine attended Emporia State University. Other priorities interrupted Racine’s college plans but she pursued her education until she was no longer physically able. Racine’s education ended at Park University where she was in her final semester of practicum working toward a degree in social work. As part of her course work Racine was working at Drumm Farm in Independence, Missouri.
Racine married James Timothy Rens on June 7, 1986 at the Congregational Church in Council Grove, Kansas. They were happily married for 28 years. Tim and Racine changed residences 17 times in there 28 years living in Missouri, Kansas, Florida, Trinidad West Indies and Pennsylvania. During this time Racine was involved in her children’s school and activities as a volunteer, was a member of the American Women’s Club in Trinidad, played competitive tennis, worked for her home associations and volunteered at Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault (MOCSA).
Racine was preceded in death by her grandparents Lloyd Read of Council Grove, Kansas; Cecil and Hazel Kendle of Council Grove, Kansas and Elmer and Elizabeth Snider of Council Grove, Kansas; her uncles Don Read, Steve Read a Tom Snider of Council Grove Kansas and her uncle Willard Foos of Webb City, Missouri.
She is survived by her spouse Tim Rens; her daughter Sidney Elizabeth Rens, 24, and her grandson Harrison Robert Kuhlmann, 2 years, of St. Louis, Missouri; her son James Derrick Rens, 21, of Columbia, Missouri; her daughters Emily Louise Rens, 14, and Abigail Racine Rens, 13, of Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania; her parents Ralph and Donna Snider of Council Grove, Kansas; her brother Ryan Tyrer Snider of Shawnee, Kansas. Racine is also survived by her father and mother in-law, Jim and Louise Rens of Clinton, MO, two brothers in law and their spouses, Troy and Jennifer Rens of Shawnee, Kansas and Tony and Karen Rens of Clinton, Missouri; and nine nieces and nephews.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at the Shoal Creek Community Church with Rev. Troy McMahon presiding. The family will begin greeting friends and relatives at 2:00 p.m. Following the service, Racine’s family will be traveling to Florida to fulfill her wish of having her ashes scattered along the beach.
