Pinkney “Pink” William Newell, 71, joined the Lord, surrounded by his loved ones after a long, brave battle with Parkinson’s disease on October 6, 2023.
Pinkney was born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri to P.J. and Marjorie Newell. He graduated from Jefferson City High School. He then attended Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman State), University of Missouri and Georgia Tech University culminating in bachelor’s, master’s and specialist degrees in education. He taught math in Ashland and Ritenour school districts and was a high school counselor in Jefferson City before working with the Missouri Department of Education, eventually becoming a regional director for Social Security Disability.
If you knew Pink, you knew he loved his daughters, his grandchildren, his wife of 38 years, his extended family, his pets, music and Volkswagens (though not necessarily in that order!) He loved a good story, laughter and making friends with people from all walks of life. To know Pinkney was to love him.
Pinkney was recently preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Michele (Hyder) Newell; his daughter Erica Canlas, (Ben) and grandchildren Ava, Tate and Nora, Columbia, Missouri; daughter Emilie Newell, Marina del Rey, California, and siblings Judy Wylie, Jefferson City, Missouri and John Newell (Debbie), Las Vegas, Nevada as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Dearest Michele and family – so sorry for your loss. May God hold you in his hands and get you through these difficult times. Your loving friends are thinking of you and sending comfort and warm thoughts.
Michele and family keeping you in my prayers.
Pinkney was one of a kind. He was a friend and mentor to me when I first started working at Disability Determinations. I have great memories of our Columbia to Jeff carpool gang . Pinkney was a true people person, full of information, stories and laughter. What a blessing to have known him!
Gods peace during this difficult time.
