Owen Gahagan, Jr. 67, a resident of Parkville, MO passed away Saturday, April 14, 2012 at St. Luke’s Hospital on the Plaza. He was born August 4, 1944 in New Orleans, LA to Owen, Sr. and Shirley Gahagan. He graduated from Joplin High School and received his BS in Geology from UMKC.
Owen was an airline pilot for Ozark Airlines from 1974 to 1986, continuing with TWA until 1999, retiring as a Captain. He was a longtime member of the Ozark Silver Swallows. After retiring from the airlines, Owen continued to enjoy his love of flying in his Columbia 400 and most recently his Evolution. In 1972 he co-founded Rockhill Manor, Inc., a residential care facility for persons with chronic mental illness. Rockhill Academy for Independent Living was established as a non-profit in 1995. Owen became the sole owner of Rockhill Manor in 1996 and he established the Rockhill Pharmacy in 2002. Also, Owen was member of the Kansas City Board of Trade.
Among the charitable organizations he supported, the most recent was a little league baseball team, the KC Rebels.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Sanders Gahagan; two sons, Owen Bryce Gahagan and wife Katie and Brett Ward Gahagan and girlfriend Morgan, both of Kansas City, MO; a granddaughter, Lauren Paige Gahagan; a cousin, Kathleen Herrmann and husband Donald of New Orleans, LA. and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
A funeral service celebrating Owen’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, April 19, 2012 at the Meyers Northland Chapel in Parkville. Burial will follow at the Walnut Grove Cemetery in Parkville. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to theRockhill Academy for Independent Living and may be left in care of the funeral home.
