Vera Nell Slaughter, 86, a resident of Independence, MO passed away peacefully Friday, September 30, 2022 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born June 12, 1936 to Jesse and Leota (Bedford) Martin in Colorado City, TX.
Vera was united in marriage to Arthur Slaughter on March 2, 1954 in Centerton, AR. She spent the majority of her working career as a receptionist at a doctor’s office. Vera was Methodist by faith. She enjoyed cross stitching, arts and crafts, and occasionally going to the casino. Above all Vera cherished spending time with her family.
Survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Arthur Slaughter of Independence, MO; son Dean Slaughter and wife Sheila of Blue Springs, MO; grandchildren, Justin Slaughter and wife Kim (Buxton) Slaughter, Cole Slaughter; great-granddaughters, Emma Slaughter, Amelia Slaughter; sister, Virginia Masten of Lubbock, TX. Vera is preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Leota Martin; brother, Ted Martin; sister, Pat Beavers.
A committal service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 11, 2022 at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville, MO. Arrangements have been entrusted to Meyers Funeral Chapel in Blue Springs. Memories of Vera and words of comfort for her family may be shared at meyersfuneralchapel.com.

My sweet, sweet, Aunt Nell will always be loved by me. She and Uncle Dean made me feel so special and always lifted me up. To be loved by Aunt Nell was total and complete. She did not know any other way. I will miss her and know we will be together again one day. Until then, I will have such good memories of her.

When I first met Dear Vera, I felt like she was a long lost friend. I loved instantly. She reminded me of my own mother. Tiny but mighty. We in the subdivision who knew her, we will never forget her. Vera was a very special lady. I always enjoyed being around art and her. I’m thankful that she is with the lord.
Vera was absolutely one of the sweetest people I know. Vera was my cousin by marriage and always went to visit every summer. Lost touch for sometime but over the last 10 yrs we have communicated by phone and in person. Dan and myself will forever have fond memories of her and Dean. ALWAYS admired their relationship. Aunt Nell was always such a sweetheart. Always had kind, loving words for everyone. I so cherish the last couple of times we spoke on the phone…priceless to me. I loved her so much. And will miss her greatly.
