Mr. John Hummel, 72, passed away peacefully at 1:10 p.m. on Saturday, October 1, 2022. At the time of his passing, John was a patient at the St. Luke’s Hospice House in Kansas City, MO. He was born April 6, 1950 in Kansas City, MO to Marvin and Rosalie (Martin) Hummel.
Following high school, John served in the United States Navy from 1968 to 1972. The majority of his time in the Navy was spent aboard the USS John F. Kennedy as a Plane Captain. He later attended and graduated from Central Missouri State University. After graduating from college, John went to work at the Leeds Automotive Plant, eventually entering their journeyman electrician program. After the closure of the plant, he joined the US Postal Service, sorting bulk mail in Kansas City, KS. In his spare time he enjoyed watching NASCAR, especially the number 24 and number 9 cars. He also enjoyed watching American Pickers, piddling in his workshop, golfing and fishing.
He married Cynthia Denice Bretall on May 27, 1972. In addition to Cindy, survivors include their two sons, John Hummel (Rachel) of Pleasant Hill, MO and Scott Hummel (Omar) of Kansas City, MO; siblings: Chris Hummel (Glenna), Tim Hummel (Cheryl), and sister-in-laws Gayle Hummel and Mary Koerkenmeier; grandchildren: Ethan, Isaac, Blake, Ally (Will) and Luka as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents as well as his brother Walt Hummel.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, at the Meyers Funeral Chapel in Blue Springs. A Memorial Service celebrating John’s life will commence at 2:00 p.m., with Chaplain Lori Hillbrich officiating. A Committal Service will follow at Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, where Military Honors will be presented under the auspices of American Legion Post #499 of Blue Springs. Memorial Contributions are suggested to St. Luke’s Hospice House and may be left in care of the Meyers Funeral Chapel, 1600 W. Main St., Blue Springs, MO 64015
