Mary Margret was born on August 5, 1923, the only child of George and Marie Marlatt. She graduated from Paseo High School, and St. Teresa College (now Avila) and received her associate degree. She worked at Kansas City Life Insurance and North Kansas City Linoleum and Carpet, before becoming a full time mother of six children. Mary Margret was a devout Catholic and very involved in St. Therese Little Flower, south of the river and then St. Therese in Parkville. In 1970, she began teaching kindergarten at St. Therese, a job she loved for 18 years. After retiring, she continued on as the Chairman of the annual St. Therese Auction for many years, she volunteered as a Eucharistic Minister serving St. Luke’s Hospital, she volunteered in the parish office every week counting collection money, and along with friends Betty McDonald and Mary Mackin started the Over 50’s group and planned and coordinated their activities. She was also a faithful volunteer to St. Pius X High School’s annual Alumni Phonathon for 18 years.
Mary Margret was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2012 but still remained very active with her family for all holidays and birthdays. After living with her granddaughter Liz Sharp and husband Brett for four years, she lived in several assisted living facilities and memory care facilities.
Left to celebrate her life are her six children and their spouses – Jim and Martha McNerney, John and Mary Jo McNerney, Mary Ann and Bob Litras, Tim and Patty McNerney, Thom and Michelle McNerney and Joe McNerney; and her niece, Nancy McNerney. Mary Margret has 20 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren, who loved her dearly. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Jim McNerney in 2001 and her granddaughter Meaghan McNerney in 1983.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her name to St. Pius X High School, 1500 NE 42nd Terr., Kansas City, MO 64116 or St. Therese Church, 7207 NW Highway 9, Kansas City, MO 64152.
