Two words come to my mind about my Aunt June. They are adventurer and historian. As a very young girl I remember her taking Riley Dean, my brother Jimmy, myself and sometimes my other cousins on these wonderful sightseeing adventures around Blue Springs and areas close by. We visited Fort Osage, different parks, Harry Truman Library (Aunt Beulah came along on this trip too) lakes, old houses on and on. Every time. explaining where we were and why we were there.. When my parents moved us to Houston, TX in 1956, Aunt June and Riley Dean were one of our first visitors. I remember on the return trip home on the train Jimmy and I joined her and Riley Dean. My first train ride! During her trips to Texas we would all visit places like Galveston Beach and San Jacinto Monument. I think one of the reasons I am proud to be an American was because she always emphasized the wonderful country we lived in and the importance of history.. She gave all of her support for Riley Dean to become an Eagle Scout. I remember how very proud she was of his accomplishment.
As time passed, our trips subsided but the history lessons continued. She and Uncle Riley were the heads of collecting anything about Burrus history. There was NEVER a time that I visited their home that I did not receive a history lesson about a recent find. I would hear juicy stories that would make me laugh and sometimes sad. When my mother passed away, I found pages of information about the Burrus family tree. Mother had written on the top, “from June.” When I saw my Aunt June in March, she told me how much she appreciated my cards. She said I cannot see much anymore but I can still talk. Then she proceeded to share a story about my Uncle Riley when they first met. Adventurer, historian and our family sage. God has taken another angel from our family.home to be with Him.
