Jim was born in Kansas City, MO on February 20, 1940. He graduated from Blue Springs High School in 1958. He then studied at KU. By the time Jim was 20 years old he was a business partner with his dad, James M. Bain, Sr., owning multiple gas stations and a Dog-n-Suds Restaurant. Jim was also a real estate agent. He was the founder and co-owner of Skin & Scuba Dive Shop with Pool in Blue Springs, and was a member of KC Frogman’s Club. Jim retired in 1999 from the Carpenter’s Local 1529, as a Superintendent. Jim painted the gas station signs free hand and also enjoyed leather carving, drawing, and painting murals. He loved to fish, and his favorites were to deep sea and trout fish; along with scuba diving, boating, camping, and hunting. Of the many places Jim had been, he loved the most spending time with his beloved family and friends at the Lake of the Ozarks, and to sit on the white sands of Gulf Shores, Alabama. Jim was intensely loyal to his immediate and extended family, which was the most important thing to him. He will be missed tremendously by us all.

He is survived by his: wife, Diana of the home; daughter, Melinda and Neal Branstetter of Grain Valley, MO; daughter, Lucinda and Scott Thurn of Grain Valley, MO; grandson, Caleb Joseph Branstetter; granddaughter, Amanda Ray Thurn; grandson, James Garrett Bain Thurn; sister, Debbie Foster of Blue Springs, MO; niece, Carrie (Bryan) Compton; nephew, Brett (Lacey) Foster.

Debby and family,
I’m so sorry to hear of Jim’s passing. Thoughts and prayers are with you and the family
Jim was a good friend and next door neighbor here at the Lake of the Ozarks. I miss his humor. I borrowed a live trap from him one time and it had spray paint on the sides. I asked him why, and he told me he caught squirrels and painted them different colors and took them to the end of Coffman Bend and turned them loose. People were claiming to have seen pink, yellow, green and orange squirrels and everyone thought they were crazy. ha ha. My condolences to Diana and all the family. Love from J.R and Fannilane

My condolences to Jim’s family for the loss of a husband and father. We who went to high school with him, remember a very smart young man that we knew would do great things. Being a friend was one of those great things. I’m so sorry for your loss.
Debby and family I feel your sorrow. Hugs to all.
Debbie and family, my deepest sympathy regarding Jim’s passing. I have very fond memories of the entire Bain family. Take care. Tim
I knew Jim longer than any of my other classmates of the class of 1958. Jim and I went to first grade together at Benton School in Kansas City,,,,we met again at the end of 5th grade when both of our families moved to Lake Tapawingo…..He was one of my seven “Tapawingo Brothers”…Our mothers were friendly rivals in the real estate business and our family never used any other gas service station but the one Jim Sr. owned…..We had a long history of being friends……Sadly there are only four “brothers” remaining….
My heartfelt to Debbie and the girls and their families…
Fondly,
Toni Agers Watson
I worked for Jim at Dog’n’ Suds in Harrisonville, MO. Started as Car Hop on opening day. I was in High School. Jim was one of the best bosses I ever had. My belated condolences to Diana, Melinda, Lucinda and Debbie and the rest of his family. He was a good man
