James Robert Gilligan, 88, a Kansas City, MO Northland resident passed away on Sunday, December 27, 2020 with his loving family by his side. James was born December 25, 1932 to James Joseph and Lilian (Volz) Gilligan in Cincinnati, OH.
James was a United States Army veteran as a 2nd Lt. officer stationed in Germany, 1954 – 1956. Upon returning home from Germany, James was united in marriage with Bettie Schweer on March 2, 1957 in Covington, KY.
James will fondly be remembered as a life-long golfer, tennis player and avid reader. Spending time with Bettie and his family meant the world to him. On January 9, 2018, James lost his best friend and the love of his life. He was lost in memories of Bettie working on completing another quilt or needle point piece. Simple pleasures in life: faith, family, and friends for both James and Bettie.
James was preceded in death by his wife, parents and two siblings: Tom Gilligan and Charlotte Wright. Bettie was preceded in death by her parents. They are survived by their children: James J. Gilligan and wife, Rose; Mary Beth Gilligan; grandchildren: Christina Gilligan, JJ Gilligan and Ariel Plumberg; and great-grandson, Ryan Gunzenhauser.
Inurnment for James and Bettie will be held Saturday, June 12, 2021 at St. Joseph Cemetery 4500 Foley Road, Cincinnati, Ohio. Memories of James and Bettie may be shared at meyersfuneralchapel.com.
