Gladys Louia Augusta (Haase) Washburn, 95, of Blue Springs, MO passed away Tuesday April 1, 2014 at St. Mary’s Manor. She was born February 19, 1919 in San Antonio, TX to Henry and Rosa (Sundermeyer) Haase. She graduated from Breckenridge High School in San Antonio and attended St. Louis College of Music for 2 years. Gladys was united in marriage to Jost Brainard Washburn on December 29, 1942 in San Antonio, TX, and he preceded her in death. She was church organist, and choir director as well as a piano and organ teacher. Gladys played for her first service at age 8 and could play a few hymns from the hymnal. One year later she could play all of them. She started playing regularly for the church at age 13. At Age 14 she started organ lessons, and at age 17 she gave her first organ recital. She said “I am very thankful for my rich heritage of the gift of music from both sides of the family.” She moved to Blue Springs Terrace in 1980. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.
Gladys is survived by her daughters, Yvonne Washburn of New Franklin, MO, Diane Washburn of Springfield, MO; son, Henry Washburn and wife Sonja of Big Rock, Ill; grandchildren, Linda Hurry of OK, Mark Washburn of NC, Tanja Washburn of AZ; great grandchildren, Ryan, Aaron, and Jordyn Hurry. Also nephew, nieces and many friends.
Visitation was, Friday, April 4, 2014 at Meyers Funeral Chapel, 1600 W. Main Street, Blue Springs, MO, 816-229-3276. Funeral services were, Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Meyers Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in New Franklin, MO. Contributions in memory of Gladys may be made to Blue Springs Terrace.
