Donna Jean (Baker) Welsh 79, of Kansas City, Missouri passed away December 27, 2016 in Naples, Florida.
Donna was born Friday, August 13, 1937 in St. Louis. She was the 7th of 8 children born to Henry Sherman Baker and Grace Henrietta (Reed) Baker. She grew up in Kansas City and attended East High School. She met and fell in love with Robert Welsh and married him July 1, 1955. They married young and immediately had a family, daughters Glenda and Tamara.
Donna and Bob decided early to set an example for their daughters and improve their life through a better education. Donna and Bob worked in unison helping each other obtain both undergraduate and multiple graduate degrees, while working and raising their young daughters. Donna was a teacher in both the Kansas City and Park Hill School Districts. Her love of education and students fulfilled her life. She was an elementary school counselor and Principal at Line Creek Elementary before retiring in 2000.
Donna received multiple recognitions over the course of her life. Donna was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and numerous professional organizations. She was a member of Mt. Washington Baptist Church but attended Platte Woods Methodist. While accomplished, she was very humble. When asked about her achievements, she would say she was most proud of winning a pancake eating contest.
In later years she loved to ride her bike and completed the MS 150 Bike Ride several times. Donna learned to sail and shared a beautiful boat at Stockton Lake with her good friend MelaDee Patterson. Donna loved to travel and to talk to people from around the world. She remained curious her entire life. Bob introduced her to the joys of camping but she also loved cruises and international travel. A very fond memory for her was attending a formal dinner at the Palace of Versailles in France.
Donna will be remembered for her compassion, ability to connect with people, loving her grandchildren and being the worst joke teller all time. She could never complete the joke due to her own infectious laughter.
Donna is preceded in death by her parents and her brother Thomas Sherman Baker. She is survived by her husband of nearly 62 years Robert and her two daughters, Glenda Welsh Corwin of Naples, FL and Tamara Judds (Joe) of Lake Waukomis, MO. Donna was especially close to her grandchildren, Camden Riley (Hollie), Andrew Riley, Allison Riley, Christopher Corwin (Kelli) and Katherine Corwin. Donna had 7 great grandchildren, Skyler, Brennen, Annaleigh, Noah, Lillian, and Charlotte. She was able to meet and spend time with her youngest great grandchild Caroline Corwin the last few weeks of her life. Her legacy will live on through her family.
Her surviving sibling brothers include William (Margaret) of Kansas City, KS and James Baker (Jerry) of Ottumwa IA. She remained very close to all of her sisters, keeping in touch on a regular basis. Sister Maxine Petersen of Mobile, AL was a second mom to Donna. Sister Geraldine Crouch (Jack) of Independence was a second mom to Glenda and Tammy. She loved sisters Audrey Collins of Kansas City, MO and Marilyn Pruente of Tucson, AZ. She is survived and loved by many nieces and nephews.
