Dixie Jean Fizer Young went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013. She was born on March 26, 1925, to Earl Clay Fizer and Stella Daggs Fizer at home in Odessa, MO. As her father was employed by a road construction company, the family frequently moved as work demanded, and in 1942, they settled in Grandview, MO. There she met her future husband Walter Hugh Young and by 1953, they, too, made their home in Grandview. Dixie was a member of the DAR, the Research Hospital Alumni, the Grandview Historical Society, and the Grandview United Methodist Church.
During WW II, Dixie attended nursing school at Research Hospital and joined the Cadet Nurse Corps. After earning her nursing degree, she worked at Research, eventually becoming Supervisor of the Recovery Room. In 1984, Dixie earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from College of St. Francis. Very much admired for her no-nonsense work ethic and excellent patient care, Dixie finally retired in 1987 after 25 years of employment.
Dixie is preceded in death by her parents, sister Margie Fizer Cochran, great-grandson Brock N. Moran, and dear friend Jack Kelly. Survivors include daughters Kathy Jean (Jim) Moran of Blue Springs, MO, and Judith Ann Castricone of Ingleside, IL; five grandchildren, Jeff (Krista) Moran, Patrick Moran, Beth Castricone (Brian) Bell, Kristin (Heath) Tepovich and Sara Castricone; great-grandchildren Kara, Anna, Lydia and Julia Moran and Jackson Bell.
Services for Dixie will be 11:00 am. Monday, January 14, 2013 at Meyers Funeral Chapel, 1600 W. Main St., Blue Springs, M0, 816-229-3276, conducted by Rev. Jeff Long. Kathy, my most heartfelt condolences at the passing of your dear Mother. May God rest her soul and bring you and your family peace and comfort at this time of great loss.
Kathy and Judy and ALL
Kathy, Judy, and Dixie’s Family, We loved your Mother. She was always so happy and down right funny. We loved the visits to my parents (Charles and Doris Skeens) house by your Mom and Dad. They loved trying to trace the “Young” roots and even found out by “DNA” testing that they were distant cousins. Dixie is loved by our whole family and shared many good times with my Dad’s sister Aunt Minne and Uncle Roy. Praise God we know because of their relationship with Jesus Christ they are enjoying the presence of our Lord and once again able to fellowship with one another. The Hope of Heaven is sweeter now because they are all there . May the peace that passes understanding be yours today. Much love and many prayers and in honor of Dixie and Hugh and the whole Skeens, Young family. Jerry and Kathy Rhea
Kathy and Judy and All that this loss has touched. I truly understand your feelings. I wonder what the first thing the “Sisters” said to each other. I pray that this time will be focused on all the wonderful ways Dixie has touched us all.

To the family and friends of Dixie Young. I feel so very lucky to have worked with Dixie as a student; a member of post anesthesia care nurses organization and to be just a friend. I learned so much from Dixie and will always consder her as a mentor at the early part of my carreer. I continue to utilize some of what I learned from her, Dixie is one of those I will always remember.
Kathy and Judy, just wanted to let you know how sorry I was to hear of Dixie’s passing. Wow! What an era has ended. I worked with Dixie from 1975-1987, and she ran a tight ship,. Even the Dr.’s paid attention when she spoke up. She was a great nurse, and a real firecracker. Since my Dad went to school with Hugh and your mom, and we went to school together, our families do go back a long ways. Sorry, but I have to work on Monday, but I will be thinking of you and your families. The Recovery room never was quite the same! God bless you all.
Kathy, I am so very sorry for your family’s loss. May you find peace and comfort in God’s strong arms.
Kathy And Judy And Family, With Deepest Sympathy. love and Prayer.

I have to say that many years ago, I was a student nurse at Research, I have always remembered Dixie as one of the most caring nurses I have ever met…. As a student, she was the nurse on 2 south (old Research), she was so helpful to all of us, I remember her teaching us procedures and letting us practice, then when our instructors checked us, we did great. This was probably something she was not supposed to do.As I said, this 50 years later it made me a better nurse,Thanks Dixie
