Delaney loved singing, dancing, drawing, looking at elephants, and watching her younger brother Jack play baseball. She was sweet and sassy, but also very stubborn, which served her well as she fought to overcome the medical challenges she faced.
Delaney was born May 20, 2002, to Danny and Dana (Hawkins) Hughes, of Kansas City. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Jan. 19, 2017, at Children’s Mercy Hospital.
Delaney lived her entire life in Kansas City and attended Children’s TLC. She also attended Park Hill schools, including Bright Beginnings early childhood center, Thomas B. Chinn Elementary School, and Lakeview Middle School. She was a freshman at Park Hill South High School, where she and her service dog, Yarrow were well-known and loved by students and teachers alike. Delaney was baptized at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, where she enjoyed attending with her family. She especially loved the upbeat music of the worship band.
Delaney is survived by her parents and brother, of the home; grandparents Duane Hughes, of Independence, and Carl and Carol Hawkins, of Kansas City; and many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by a grandmother, Diane Hughes, and her great-grandparents.
The visitation will be 5-7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, and the memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 28, both at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, 9555 N. Oak Tfwy., Kansas City, MO 64155. The church’s worship band will play some of Delaney’s favorite songs at the service. The family is accepting donations which will be used to purchase and train a seizure alert dog for a family / child in need. Arrangements by Meyers Northland Chapel in Parkville.
