Our mother was born Carmen Maria Martinez to Petra Gonzales Martinez and Edward Martinez, Sr. She grew up in Kansas City and graduated from Argentine High School.
Carmen distinguished herself during World War II as an assembler of radar sets for B-25 bombers at North American Aviation in Kansas City. At the time, radar was top secret technology vital to the success of the war effort. Carmen worked 12 hour days, 6 days a week. Her workstation was in a steel cage with armed guards to protect her and her work.
She married John Gonzales in 1949. She raised her two sons working as a homemaker and also worked as a sewing machine operator for the Myrtle Gordon Inc. She also volunteered for several organizations including; a Cub Scout den mother and she worked with the Catholic Action Club at Little Flower Parish in Oklahoma City, After John passed away in 1983, Carmen moved to Downey, CA where she eventually married Jesse Villanueva whom she had known from high school in Kansas City. Jesse and Carmen lived in Downey until 2001. Carmen then moved to Ventura, CA to be close to her sons.
Carmen is survived by her sons, Marvin Gonzales of Cerritos, CA and Edmund Gonzales (Aurora) of Ventura, CA; grandsons, Daron Gonzales (Melissa) of Phoenix, AZ and Jared (JD) Gonzales of Cerritos, CA; brother, Robert Martinez (Teresa) of Las Vegas, NV; sister, Helen Mendez and brother, Ruben Martinez (Peggy) both of Kansas City.
The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 p.m., Thursday, March 17, at the Meyers Northland Chapel, Parkville, MO 401 Main Street Parkville, MO; where the Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 18, 2016 at St. Therese Catholic Church 7207 N.W. Highway 9 Kansas City, MO. Burial will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Topeka, KS. Memories of Carmen and condolences to the family may be shared at meyersfuneralchapel.com
