Robert John “Bob” Werthmuller, 98, Kansas City, KS (formerly of Weatherby Lake, MO) passed away peacefully Tuesday, February 28, 2023. Bob was born December 9, 1924 in Brooklyn, New York.
Robert was united in marriage with the love of his life, Angele Garinian on March 24, 1953 in Cairo, Egypt. They eventually settled with their children in Kansas City.
Bob was a World War II, United States Army Air Corps veteran. He served as a PFC engine mechanic on the B-17 Flying Fortress with the 560th Bomber Squadron of the 388 Bomb Group. He received decorations and citations for the following battles and campaigns: Air Offensive Europe; Ardennes, Central Europe; Normandy, Northern France; Rhineland, Distinguished Unit Badge; European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal; and Good Conduct Medal. He was Honorably Discharged September 30, 1945.
Following his time in the Army Air Corps, Bob worked as an airline mechanic for Trans World Airlines (TWA). He started as a mechanic on the Super Constellation in Cairo, Egypt. Here he met Angele and where their four wonderful children were born. The family moved to Paris France for a few years before transferring to Kansas City Missouri, the maintenance hub for TWA. Bob was a maintenance coordinator for all TWA overseas operations, ensuring the rapid return to service of TWA aircraft that were in need of repair.
The Werthmuller family lived on Weatherby Lake, close to the Kansas City airport. The lake is where Bob enjoyed spending time with Angele and his family. He was an avid reader of National Geographic Magazine or any educational material accessible. He enjoyed traveling the world with Angele and his children on vacations.
Bob is survived by: one son, Lawrence “Larry” Werthmuller (Cindy); three daughters: Mary DeCaprio (David); Angele “Angie” Barrow (Brent); Linda Schelp (Myron); five grandchildren: Stephanie, Zachary, Jared, Blake and Ashley; five great-grandchildren: Ava, Neriah, Isaiah, Genevieve and Evanell. Bob had four siblings who preceded him in death: Reginald, Francis, Catherine and Lawrence. Bob was also preceded in death by his wife Angele Werthmuller, and both parents.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 4, 2023 at Meyers Northland Chapel in Parkville, MO. The Funeral service will commence at 11:00 a.m. at the chapel. Burial will immediately follow at Terrace Park Cemetery in Kansas City, MO. In lieu of flowers Memorial contributions are suggested to Veterans Community Project 8900 Troost Kansas City, MO. My deepest sympathies to the Werthmuller family on the loss of Bob. Bob and Angele were long time residents and active volunteers at Weatherby Lake. Everyone knew them for their kindness and generosity of their time and talents. Bob was always willing to help wherever needed. They were two very special people. Working with Bob in TWA’s Maintenance Coordination office was always fun, he was the consummate aviation professional and a pleasure to have on our MCIMD Team.
