William E. Coons, of Parkville, Missouri, took the final step of his earthly journey on September 29, 2016 with his wife of 63 years, Lola, and daughter, Kim by his side as he moved forward to join those loved ones who have gone before and to wait for those who are yet to come.
William Eugene (Bill) Coons was born on September 1, 1929, in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, to parents Bruce and Maurine (Boggess) Coons. He graduated from Smithville High School, where he enjoyed FFA and earned his State Farmer Degree, was an Eagle Scout and in The Tribe of Mic o Say, played the saxophone in a swing band with his good buddies, and played several sports, his proudest moment of which was playing lineman on the 1946 undefeated state championship football team.
Following high school, he attended Northwest Missouri State University, worked for the United States government on the Alaska Railroad, and served in the Army during the Korean War. After leaving the service, Bill returned to Smithville and began his long career with Producers & Texas Livestock Marketing Association at the Kansas City Stockyards, where he worked in hog sales, as a field man, and assistant manager. This was also the time when he met the new music teacher at Smithville, Lola Bell Dunn, from Auxvasse, Missouri. They were married on December 26, 1953. Three years later, they moved to their farm near Parkville, where they raised their two children, William D. and Kimberley.
Bill served as a Governor of the American Royal for many years and judged hog shows all across the state. He was a 4-H leader and provided wisdom and advice for those he mentored. He was a lifetime member of the Disciples of Christ Faith and served as an elder for a number of years. He was currently attending Living Water Christian Church.
Retiring from Producers after 42 years allowed Bill to spend time helping Lola with their Bed & Breakfast, Down to Earth Lifestyles, which they both retired from in 2004 after 22 years. This allowed Bill to spend time with surviving family members wife, Lola, son Bill Coons and wife Brenda of Parkville, daughter Kim Oaks and husband Bryan, of Galt, grandson Justin Oaks and wife Stephanie, and great-grandchildren, Grant, Kaden, and Ryland, of Harris, grandson Seth Oaks and wife Joni, and great-grandchildren Johannes, Landry, and Liam of Newtown, and grandson Kabel, of Galt. Bill will be missed.
Memorial services will be 1:00 pm Saturday October 1st at Living Water Christian Church,12411 NW 45 Hwy,. with visitation beginning at 11:00 am. Burial will be in Smithville Memorial Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Living Water Christian Church, North Care Hospice, or Collaboration Works. Arrangements are entrusted to Meyers Northland Funeral Chapel, Parkville, Missouri (816 741 0251).
