Bernice “Bernie” Allen Bartley, Jr., 94, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 2, 2023 at the Villages of Jackson Creek Memory Care, Independence, MO.
He was born on April 25, 1929, to Bernice and Venita (Pitts) Bartley in Wells, Kansas. He married Donna Darlene Deschand on September 1, 1949, at Aurora, Kansas. Together they shared 73 wonderful years of marriage. They were blessed with three children; Dallas Lynn, Berna Dee and Lena LoRee.
Bernie graduated in 1947 from Miltonvale Royal High School in Miltonvale, Kansas. In 1961 he embarked upon a long and productive career with General Motors Corporation. He retired in 1993 as a Zone Service Manager of the Oldsmobile Division of General Motors Corporation. He was a member of St. John Lalande Catholic Church in Blue Springs, Missouri. He was a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus and the Elks Lodge. In 1978-1979, Bernie was awarded the honor of the Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge in Blue Springs, Missouri. He was a Master Gardener, avid fisherman and an award winning wood carver. He was a loving husband and father. He will be remembered most for being a self-made man, his amazing talent with wood, his quick wit, perseverance, honesty, integrity and tenacity.
Bernie is survived by his two daughters; Lena LoRee Stephens (Tom) of Independence, Missouri and Berna Dee Calcutt (William) of Traverse City, Michigan. He is also survived by his brother, LeRoy Bartley (Betty) of Clay City, Kansas. Five grandchildren; Brandon White (Sarah) Paxton White, Desmond White (Amanda), all of Traverse City, Michigan and Kyle and Preston Stephens, both of Independence, Missouri. He is also blessed with seven great grandchildren and one great great grandson.
Bernie was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Donna, his beloved son Dallas, his sister, Joyce Hemphill of Cherryvale, Kansas and his grandson Travis White of Traverse City, Michigan.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M., Monday, August 7, 2023 at St. John LaLande Catholic Church, 805 N.W. RD Mize Rd, Blue Springs, MO. The family will receive friends and family from 10:00 – 10:30 with a Rosary starting at 10:30 at the church prior to the start of Mass. Burial will follow on Tuesday, August 8 at 1:00 P.M. at the Miltonvale Cemetery in Miltonvale, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to St. John Lalande Catholic Church in Memory of Bernie.
