Barry Nelson Spears, 71, of Kansas City, Missouri passed away March 30, 2017. Barry was at home surrounded by his loving family. A memorial visitation will be held Thursday, April 6th, at Meyers Northland Funeral Chapel in Parkville, Mo. from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. Memorial services will be held Friday, April 7th, 10:00 a.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church in Alma, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Missouri Department of Conservation (mdc.mo.gov), of which Barry was a lifetime member.
Barry started his career working as a ticket agent for Continental Airlines for 20 years. He then changed paths and became a butcher. Welcoming his regulars with a smile was one of his many charms. Barry retired from Hen House Market (off I-29 & 64th street) in 2015.
Barry loved nature, hunting, fishing, traveling, taking pictures and sports. In retirement, Barry filled his days as an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing often times along with his lifelong friend Gene Burrow. He enjoyed traveling to Tennessee to spend time with his girlfriend Bobbi. Barry cheered on his Kansas City Royals and Missouri Tigers but especially enjoyed tracking his oldest son Adam’s cycling competitions.
Barry, aka “The Sheriff” to his granddaughters, recently enjoyed trips to the Lake of the Ozarks to visit his youngest son Mark and his family. Always showing up with cherry jelly beans, the girls raced to settle Papa Bear into “The Chateau”. Papa would fill his lake days teaching everyone about the birds and animals he would see and fishing. He got a kick out of watching the girls and always had them on his lap showing them pictures he had taken or trail-cam pics.
Barry always made family dinner that Susan (Barry’s first wife and mother of his sons) hosted a priority when Adam and Mark came to Kansas City. They enjoyed catching up and spent hours reminiscing and trading hunting, fishing and sports stories.
Barry was preceded in death by his parents, Alexander and Erna (Klaustermeyer) Spears, and his brother, Mark Spears. Survivors include his sons; Adam Spears, Mark Spears (McCarten Spears), grandchildren; Harper, Sloan and Rozyn, nephew(like a son), Matt Sullivan, his sisters; Judy Haussler and Rebecca Spears, along with other nieces and nephews.
