Alice Lopez Mitchell passed away March 16, 2016. Her four children were honored to have cared for her, and to be at her side as she completed her final journey.
Her life began in Pleasonton, Texas as the middle child of Felix and Mary Flores Lopez. She had a happy childhood and was raised with an abundance of love, humor, and discipline. The guiding principle her father imparted to her was this: “You have to learn to take care of yourself- because no one else will do it for you!” Alice embraced that philosophy her entire life. Not only did she take care of herself, she took care of her four children, and she lovingly helped raise her 7 grandchildren. She took care of many patients as a registered nurse, and she nurtured many strong, life-long friendships. She was a giver to the very end.
Alice was a person of great strength and intelligence. This was evident in her successful career as a nurse and in the way she excelled at a variety of jobs and hobbies. Early in her nursing career she was named the youngest administrator of Mid Missouri Mental Health Center. She was a gourmet cook and had traveled to Europe for cooking lessons. She worked full time while all of her children were born and helped put her husband through medical school. Later in life when she was ready for a change of pace she became a stewardess for a private airline that catered to royalty and rock stars. Alice was never star struck by any of these clients. For fun she was also the Camp Nurse at Kanakuk Kamp one summer where her children went to Camp.
There was just something special about her. Even strangers would pick up on this. Alice loved to talk to people and ask questions. When she wanted your full attention, she would do what her grandchildren called “the wrist grab.” It was not unusual for complete strangers to tell Alice the most intimate details of their lives. She was always fun to be around and we have fond memories of trips we took, rainy camping trips, Spanish slang, and riding in one of her Cadillacs- always above the posted speed limit!
Alice is survived by her four children: Kim (JC) Dorzweiler of Shawnee, KS; Shelly (Tom) Clinkenbeard of Parkville, MO; Becky Dennis of Conroe, TX; Jon (Brittany) Mitchell of Virginia Beach, VA. Her seven grandchildren: Chris Dorzweiler, Matthew and Annie Clinkenbeard, Trevor and Sydney Dennis, Caleb and Grayson Mitchell. Her family would like to thank Gwen Kirkland, RN, Dr. James M. Walden, and Dr. David Marcus for their exceptional care of Alice.
We will miss her terribly but will continue on, taking care of ourselves, as she taught us to do. We will have a celebration of Alice’s life this summer and would love for all of her friends to come and share stories of Alice with us.
