Nelda Von Horton, 91, a Northland resident in Kansas City, MO passed away Friday, January 12, 2018 at the St. Luke’s Hospice House in Kansas City. She was born October 30, 1926 in Twin Falls, ID to Thomas and Cora (Lynch) Bridges.
Nelda graduated from Commerce High School in Commerce, OK, and she later attended Graceland College in Lamoni, IA. Nelda spent the majority of her working years as an accountant. Some of the businesses she worked for were Coca Cola Bottling in California and Herald Publishing House in Independence, MO. She finished her career working for the Internal Revenue Service.
Nelda was a lifelong member of the Community of Christ Church. She also enjoyed bowling and was an avid bowler through her 91 years. To her family and friends, Nelda was known as the “game lady” because of her love for both board and card games. She taught many games to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She would always invite anyone to join her and have some fun.
Nelda married Earl E Horton on January 15, 1949 in Sacramento, CA. Together they celebrated 61 years of marriage. They were the proud parents of three children which include Earlynn and John Reiff, Mary Jo and Evan Manuel, and Tom and Kelly Horton. Earlynn’s family includes son Michael and Elsa Reiff and their three children Jon, Lily and Finn; daughter Stacy and Jeremy Bullcoming and their three children Audrey, Hadleigh, and Mason; and daughter Kelly and Brandon Yoder and their four children Peyton, Kamryn, Brooklyn, and Bryant. Mary Jo’s family includes son Jeff and Karyn (Wingard) Manuel and their two sons Grayson and Brooks; son Ryan and Christine (Davidson) Manuel and their son Henry; and daughter Jamie and Geoff White. Tom’s family includes daughter Dianne and Oley Denmark and their children Elijah and Makayla; daughter Katelyn and Lance Milligan and their son Asher; and daughter Sydney Horton.
Nelda is survived by her four sisters-in-law: Ethel Bridges, Lynda Bridges, Helen Horton, and Annie Key. Nelda was preceded in death by her husband Earl, her parents, and two brothers Leroy and Donald.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate Nelda’s life on Monday February 19, 2018 at 12:00 pm till 2:00 pm at Riverstone Retirement Community, 9000 N. Congress, Kansas City, MO 64153.
