Richard “Rick” Wright, 68, a Northland resident of Kansas City, MO passed away on Saturday, January 6, 2018. Rick was born March 29, 1949 to Joseph Woodroe and Audrey Elizabeth (Taylor) Wright in Camp Carson, CO.
Rick is a veteran of the United States Air Force. He joined the USAF in 1970, served his country during the Vietnam Era; and was honorably discharged as a Sgt. in 1974.
He met Lara Charlene Hayden in Kansas City and they were married in 1974.
After serving his country, he attended the University of Colorado at Boulder and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology.
Rick and Charlene eventually settled in Kansas City, where Rick attended UMKC to earn his Masters in Psychology. He also worked for the city of Kansas City, MO in the Fire Dispatch IT Department many years; he retired from the city as the Communications Manager. Rick also taught Psychology throughout the years at Maple Woods Community College and Johnson County Community College as a Psychology Professor.
In 1985, they welcomed their daughter, Rebecca Allison into their loving family. Rick and Charlene hosted many Foreign Exchange Students, which also became family.
Rick enjoyed watching football, drinking coffee, family time, relaxing to his favorite shows and being with his cats. He had a huge heart for all animals and a soft spot for cats. He was a wonderful teacher and a good conversationalist. He will be remembered for his sarcastic wit and engaging personality.
He is survived by two daughters: Jennifer Steele of Gillette, WY and Rebecca and husband, Ryne Bolsenga of Trimble, MO; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is preceded in death by his wife, Lara Charlene Wright, both parents, and a sister, Patrician Velotta.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at Meyers Northland Chapel in Parkville, MO. The Funeral service will immediately follow at 7:00 p.m. A Committal Service with military honors under the auspices of the United States Air Force will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, January 11, 2018 at Leavenworth National Cemetery 150 Muncie Road Leavenworth, KS.
