Brigadier General Samuel P. Mitchell, Jr., 79, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away on January 5, 2018. A visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church chapel in Liberty, Missouri. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, January 11, 2018 at the church. Burial will be immediately following at 12:30 p.m. at the Leavenworth National Cemetery 150 Muncie Road Leavenworth, KS with full military honors.
Sam was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on August 10, 1938 to Samuel P. Mitchell, Senior and Blanche Pettigrew. He attended military school from the sixth grade and graduated from Admiral Farragut Academy of Saint Petersburg, Florida in June 1956. He graduated from the University of Florida in 1958 with a Bachelor Degree from the College of Architectural Engineering. He joined the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and held many elected positions during his undergraduate years.
He was a Distinguished Graduate of the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Program, receiving a Regular Commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force. He has commanded numerous aircraft, and has served as a C-130 group deputy-commander of operations, an A-10 wing deputy-commander of resources, a C-130 wing vice- commander and in a Headquarters U.S. Air Force staff position. He retired from the Air Force on July 17, 1996 after 34 ½ years of service to the nation.
Sam was very active in the Reserve Officers Association (ROA). He served in every elected position in the Chapter and State Department organizations before being elected as National President for the period 1989-1990. He has remained very active as a Past National President of ROA ever since his tour of duty was completed.
In civilian life, he was a commercial pilot for Trans World Airlines for over 30 years.
After his retirement, he served as a Liaison Officer assisting numerous young men and women as they sought entrance to military academies. He found mentoring young people in this capacity very fulfilling and gave him confidence in the future in our country.
He is survived by his wife, June Mitchell; two children Samuel P. Mitchell III (Tonya) and Leland Mitchell (Michelle); four grandchildren Samuel P. Mitchell IV, Tessa Mitchell, Gabriel Mitchell and Jakob Mitchell; a nephew Pastor Allan Mitchell (Ann) from Venice, FL; cousin, Charles Lake (Marily) Lake of Lakeland, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Marvin Mitchell.
