Rick was born in Marshall, MO on July 28, 1955 to Robert L. and Anna L. “Puddin” (Cromley) Sheffer. He graduated from Marshall High School in 1973 where he played football and ran track. He loved growing up in Marshall with his younger sister, Donna Gay, and spent many summers helping out on his family’s farm.
Shortly after graduation, he moved to Kansas City, MO and completed his drafting degree. He began his Building Engineering career with residential buildings for a short time before settling in with commercial buildings for most of his career, most recently as a supervisor at City Center Square.
On May 16, 1986, he went on his first date with Nancy Cusimano and were married exactly one year later on May 16, 1987 at Park Hill Baptist Church. On January 1, 1989 and January 27, 1991, he welcomed his two beautiful daughters, Emilia and Elizabeth, who were the center of his universe.
Rick always placed family first. He particularly enjoyed annual family vacations around the world with lots of friends and family, most commonly to Disney World and Old Town to look at classic cars. In his free time, Rick loved to take pictures of his family and nature, crack jokes, listen to Classic Rock-n-Roll, Gospel, and old Country Western music on YouTube, eat Mexican food and drink “lemonade (margaritas), tell wild stories of his younger years, make homemade biscuits and gravy before the sun came up, and collect vintage things he saw the value in. Rick never met a stranger or forgot a face. He treasured everyone and everything in his life and was fulfilled when spending quality time with the ones he loved most.
He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Sheffer; two daughters: Emilia Sheffer (David), Elizabeth Sheffer-Hinkle (Stephen); a sister, Donna Thornton (Dan); two nephews: Shaun Lembke (LaTausha) and Curtis Lembke; his in-laws Robert and Marilyn Cusimano; the Morgan-Rogers family; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by both parents.
The family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 7, 2017 at the Park Hill Baptist Church, 7609 Highway 9, Kansas City, MO. A Celebration of Rick’s Life will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Alex Moore officiating. Memorial contributions are suggested to Make A Wish Foundation.
