Shirley served his country proudly during the WWII Occupation and the Korean Conflict as an aerial photographer. He was united in marriage to Maurine Brown on June 20, 1954 in New Franklin, MO. Shirley worked for AT&T Longlines as a network engineer and retired in 1988. Following his retirement from AT&T Longlines, he worked as a funeral director for D.W. Newcomer’s & Sons Funeral Home in Blue Springs, MO, which is currently Meyers Funeral Chapel. For 67 years Shirley played the piano and organ for various church services in the area.
Survivors include wife, Maurine Dodson of Blue Springs, MO; son, Douglas Dodson (Lana) of Grain Valley, MO; daughters, Donna Sue McDonald (Anthony M. Simonie) of Lee’s Summit, MO, Jill Wallace (Randy) of Blue Springs, MO; grandchildren, Matthew McDonald (Amy), Adam McDonald (Leah), Christopher McDonald, Douglas Dodson II (Sacha), Deborah Hokanson (Peter), Christian Wallace, Alexandra Wallace; great-grandchildren, Drew McDonald, Lauren McDonald, Steven McDonald, Drake McDonald, Addie McDonald, Piper McDonald, Chase Hokanson, Katie Hokanson, David Hokanson, Douglas Dodson III, Max Dodson, Hugo Dodson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Sudie Dodson.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, August 9, 2017, at Meyers Funeral Chapel, 1600 W. Main St, Blue Springs, MO. Funeral service will start at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 10, 2017 at the chapel. Graveside service will follow at 2:00 p.m., at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in New Franklin, MO.
