Bobby McCray Thompson, 81, a resident of Parkville, MO and formerly of Springfield, MO passed away May 12, 2017, at the North Kansas City Hospital. He was born October 2, 1935 in Bladenboro, NC to Claude and Bertie (Carroll) Thompson.
Bobby graduated from Tar Heel High School in Tar Heel, NC and attended Drury College in Springfield, MO and Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, AR. Bobby had a 30 year career with the Missouri Department of Transportation (MODOT), where he retired in 2000 as a Senior Outdoor Advertising Specialist.
Bobby was of the Episcopal faith and former member of the Church of the Redeemer, near Platte Woods, MO. Bobby had a love for baseball and was an avid North Carolina Tar Heel fan. He also enjoyed fishing, golfing and he had an extensive stamp collection. Bobby’s biggest passion was his family, especially “The boys”, his children and grandchildren. He was loved by all and will be dearly missed.
He married the love of his life, Suzanne Batey on July 22, 1961 in Springfield, MO. In addition to Suzanne, survivors include his son, Gregory McCray Thompson and wife, Pam of Kansas City North; his sister, Mazelle Doolin of Eldon, MO; two grandchildren, Mitchell McCray Thompson and Nathan Robert Thompson; a sister-in-law, Karen Batey Johnson (Doug); several extended family members, including nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Robert William Thompson, a grandson, Ryan McCray Thompson and four siblings.
A funeral service celebrating Bobby’s life will be held 7:00 p.m. Thursday, May 18, 2017, at the Meyers Northland Chapel in Parkville. The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 p.m., prior to the service. Private burial will be held at the Memorial Park Cemetery, Columbia, MO.
