George was born February 24, 1942, in St. Louis, Missouri, to the late George Robert and Rosemary Bergdorf Mills. After graduating from Webster Groves High School in Webster Groves, Missouri, George attended the University of Missouri – Columbia, where he graduated with a degree in Journalism in 1964. While in college, George worked for KOMU-TV in Columbia, beginning what would be a lifelong career in the news business.
Following graduation, George accepted a position at KGWA Radio in Enid, Oklahoma. He went on to work for WANE-TV in Fort Wayne, Indiana; WCKT-TV (now WSVN-TV) in Miami, Florida; then SKYCOM, (now NBC NewsChannel) in New York City, New York. While in New York, he designed and implemented SKYCOM and served as the Operations Director of the NBC News Specials during the Gulf War. He then moved to Billings, Montana, where he served as News Director for KULR-TV, before accepting the position of News Director at KYMA-TV in Yuma, Arizona. In 1999, he accepted the Assistant News Director position at WDAF Fox4 in Kansas City, Missouri, where he was still employed.
George had a passion for news, but more importantly, he had a passion for helping people develop their careers in the television news business. He mentored a countless number of young people, many of whom attributed their success to George’s influence.
He truly loved the outdoors, enjoying hunting, fishing and camping. He especially loved his family’s fly-fishing trips to Bennett Springs, Missouri. In addition to the outdoors, George enjoyed following Mizzou football. He held season tickets for several years, making a point to attend as many games as possible, particularly while his children were in college in Columbia, Missouri. He was a proud father and grandpa, and loved sharing stories and updates of his children’s and grandchildren’s lives.
Survivors include his children, Paul (Alana) Mills of Charleston, Missouri, and Quinn Mills of Kansas City, Missouri; three granddaughters, Mason, and twins, Ruby and Nora. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Brian Mills.
George will be greatly missed by his loving family, friends, and all who knew him. A Celebration of Life gathering will be held from 12:00 – 4:00 pm Saturday, April 29, 2017, at Eagles Nest Clubhouse in the Platte Brooke North subdivision, 3502 NW Platte Brooke Drive. A brief service will begin at 1:00 pm. Casual dress is requested.
A private burial ceremony will be held at a later date at the Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery in Webster Groves, Missouri.
