Lois Hockensmith, 92, a Northland resident of Kansas City, MO passed away on Tuesday, May 31, 2016.
Lois Charlene Carmichael was born October 30, 1923, to Marvin S. and Nellie V. Carmichael at Pickering, Missouri. She attended Bloomfield School and graduated Valedictorian from Pickering High School in 1941. She attended Northwest Missouri State Teachers College, Maryville. As a young woman she aspired to become a pharmacist, but laid that ambition aside to marry David W. Hockensmith on March 23, 1943. She and Dave met when he was attracted to the young woman detailing a display in the J.C. Penny Store window in Maryville. He smiled. She smiled back. They loved one another through 72 years of marriage. Dave & Lois were married ten days before he reported for service in WWII.
Lois was a wife, a mom, a homemaker, a Cub Scout Den Mother, and much more. At an early age she was baptized into Christ at the Pickering Christian Church, where she taught Sunday School and sang alto in the choir for many years. She was a member of the Bloomfield needlework club and was active in the PTA in the 50s and 60s. Lois & Dave loved to play canasta and pitch with friends in the Pickering neighborhood. They blessed their sons with love, a love of family, Christian values, a strong work ethic, and the freedom to learn & live life to its fullest.
Lois and Dave were business as well as life partners. While farming for 20 years they owned and operated Hockensmith & Sons Seed Cleaning and a farm equipment outlet. From 1965 to 1985 they owned and operated Hockensmith Electric Company where Lois served as bookkeeper and office manager.
In retirement Lois and D.W. travelled widely and wintered in Palm Springs several years. Retirement brought a move to Kansas City in 1992. She was a member of Park Hill Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and was a member of the group known as Young at Heart, and the Rebecca Circle of the Christian Women’s Fellowship.
