Mary A. Hodge, 84, of Liberty, MO passed away Saturday, May 28, 2016 at NorthCare Hospice House in North Kansas City, MO. Mary’s passage into heaven was very peaceful as she was surrounded by her husband, all four of her daughters, a son-in-law and one of her granddaughters, as well as ministers from her church. She had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer only four days earlier.
Mary Aresteen Ellis was born October 2, 1931 in Kansas City, MO. She spent most of her life in the Kansas City area. Mary and her first husband, Gerald Straker, lived in Kansas City, raising all five of their children in Kansas City’s “Northland”. Mary worked as a Nurse’s Aide for many years at North Kansas City Hospital.
On February 19, 1974, Mary married Donald R. Hodge, and the couple moved to B&H Cove off BB Highway in Warsaw the following year. Don and Mary Hodge were active members of Poplar Baptist Church, where Donald was a Trustee and Mary taught Sunday School. Although Don and Mary enjoyed their life at the lake, Mary’s dedication to her career in health care did not fade, so she enrolled in the Nursing Program at State Fair Community College in Sedalia. She graduated in August, 1980 and, at the age of 49, Mary received her Certificate of Nursing (LPN) from the Missouri State Board of Nursing on December 15, 1980. Mary loved caring for others at Golden Valley Hospital in Clinton, Warsaw Nursing Home and a home health agency.
Don and Mary moved back to the Northland in Kansas City in 1999. Mary continued working as an LPN at various nursing homes and in home health care. She finally retired in her late 70’s.
Mary leaves her husband Donald R. Hodge of the home; her daughters Karen Dymond (Greg) of Gravois Mills, Debbie Van Pelt-McEnroe (Larry) of Lee’s Summit, Vickie Anderson of Gravois Mills and Laura Landon of Kansas City, her step-son, Darrell Hodge of Dallas, TX; her brother John B.
