Laura Virginia Flathers, 85, of Independence, MO passed away December 29, 2014. Laura was born January 27, 1929 in Marshall, MO to James and Minnie (Schieberl) Barr. She devoted her life to her family and was very much loved by her husband of 67 years, Donald L. Flathers, her 9 children, 25 grandchildren, and 31 great-grandchildren.
Laura loved God above all. She made sure her family knew and loved God as well. She was the driving force behind her kids religious education. When Laura couldn’t attend church she would watch the service on television on Sunday. Laura had a kind and loving spirit. She enjoyed her kids and grandkids. She would sing to them when they were sad or sick. She would fix made to order pancakes in the shape of bears or turtles. She would fix the best hot dogs, a special lemonade drink, homemade pies and fudge. Laura taught herself how to decorate cakes. She would make roses and leaves to decorate a birthday cake. They would look professional. Everyone enjoyed having Thanksgiving dinner at Laura’s house. She was such a great cook. A lot of love went into everything she did.
In addition to her husband, Donald, survivors include daughters, Cynthia Grosse (Phil), Donna Martin (Michael), Rhonda Green (John), Kimberly Nguyen, Joan Jones (Bruce); sons Donald, Jr., John (Kim) and Christopher (Amanda) Flathers; brother, Bernard Barr; sisters, Rosemary Barr and Annetta Nickles. She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, four brothers, daughter Brenda Flathers and granddaughter Jamie Martin.
The visitation will be held at 10:00 am Monday, January 5, 2015 at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Independence, MO, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 am.
