Spencer “Rube” Walcott, Jr., 82, passed away January 29, 2014. Preceded in death by his parents, Spencer Sr. and Lily, of Fayette, Missouri; brothers: Charlie, George and Gene; sisters: Isella Hilburn, Pauline Holst and Joanne Story; son, Shon Derrick Walcott. He is survived by his wife Earline (Story); sisters, Irene Walker, and Ada Lutz; brother, Joe Walcott; daughter, Rita (Chris) Robles; two sons, Reuben (Sharon) Walcott and Aubry (Peggy) Walcott, Sr.; 11 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; many cousins, nieces, nephews and in-laws.
As a young man Rube worked hard with his siblings to survive on the farm; hauling hay, and trimming trees. He also worked as a paperboy and a waiter. Rube played one year of college football until drafted in 1953. Rube was a Korean Veteran in the Army Corp of Engineers. Rube and Earline married on June 3, 1956 in Independence, Missouri. They later became Kansas residents where he worked as a diesel mechanic, supervisor and branch manager for International Harvester and Deffenbaugh Industries, where he retired in 2001.
There will be a memorial gathering for family and friends at the American Legion, post 499, Southwest Route 7, Blue Springs, Missouri, on Sunday, February 2, 2014 from 1-3:30 pm, followed by a modest gravesite salute at the Blue Springs Cemetery. Flowers can be sent to the American Legion on Sunday February 2, 2014 from 12-3:30 pm. Contributions may be sent to Rubes church, First Church of Christ Scientist, 9224 West 57th Merriam, KS 66203, or the Wounded Warrior Project.
